What is Ayurveda – The Science of Life

How to live a healthy life. That is something for which we are always searching. I found a system of medicine known as Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine which originated several thousand years ago in India and has long been the main system of health care in that country. This form of professional medicine wasn’t recognized and practiced in the United States until the late 20th century. In this article I will give you a complete overview of this holistic approach to a much healthier way to life for you and the ones you love.

What is Ayurveda? The word Ayurveda translates to “the science of life.” It combines two Sanskrit words. One being ayur, meaning life, and veda which means science. This system of medicine balances and integrates the mind, body and spirit which means that it is “holistic”. Ayurveda proposes that balance is essential for good health and being content.

Specific health problems are also addressed and resolved with this system. Cleansing the body of all substances that cause disease is the aim of Ayurveda. This will help to maintain balance and harmony which is believed to be necessary for optimal health.

In the western world there is a separation between food and medicine but the distinction between the two in Ayurvedic medicine is not as clear. Ayurveda relies heavily on plants used for medicine, herbs, oils, spices and other natural substances. Currently there are approximately 5,000 products included in the treatments to heal, resolve pain issues, and promote vitality.
